The Navy Good Conduct Medal is awarded on selective basis and recognizes four years of continuous active duty above active conduct by enlisted service members in the United States Navy or United States Navy Reserve. This awarded has been present since 1961, and is awarded only for qualifying service. It is awarded to members of the Navy that have been discharged or released to inactive duty within three months of their enlistment’s expiration.
The medal can also be awarded to individuals that are killed in combat action or die because of a wound suffered during combat. In this case, the award would be presented to the next of kin. It can be awarded to individuals who are separated from the naval service because of physical disability that is caused by wounds suffered during combat action. It can also be awarded to individuals who die while under the status of Prisoner of War, and present to the next of kin.
